Huge explosion as attack deep inside Russia targets Kremlin’s supersonic bombers

Moscow has accused Ukraine of carrying out a “terrorist attack” after an airbase on was targeted.

The base is believed to hold at least 12 Tu-22M3 bombers, which carry X-22 missiles regularly used in the war.

Kyiv is yet to comment publicly on the Soltsy incident, though President Volodymyr Zelensky has said attacks on Russian soil are “an inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair process” of war.

On Ukrainian soil, Vladimir Putin’s bombs rained down on the northern city of Chernihiv today, leaving seven dead and a further 129 wounded.

A theater and university are among key buildings to be significantly damaged.

Fifteen children are among the injured, according to Kyiv’s interior ministry, with at least 25 hospitalized.

Victims included residents who had been in church to celebrate an Orthodox Christian holiday. 

“It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians,” Denise Brown, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, said in a statement.

Chernihiv – which had a pre-war population of around 285,000 – is located roughly 30 miles from the border with Belarus.
